5 Things You Can Do to Improve Your Relationship

According to the American Psychological Association, about 90% of Americans get married by the age of 50 but around 40 percent of these marriages end in divorce. If you believe that you have found the love of your life, then don’t let them go. Here are some easy ways to strengthen your bond.

How Can You Improve Your Relationship?

1. Call Each Other by Pet Names

A study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships revealed that using “insider language” helps couples maintain a healthy relationship. The terms they use are an indication of the bond they share. One important part of this language is the nicknames that couple have for each other. According to an article published in Psychology Today, pet names among couples is a good idea. Using names such as ‘honey’, ‘cupcake’ or ‘peaches’ shows their affection towards each other.

2. Show Your Affection

You don’t need to build a monument to show your love for your partner. Doing simple things like brewing a cup of coffee for them or cooking breakfast would do. One of the biggest reasons for discontent in a relationship is when one or both partners feel taken for granted. This is also one of the major reasons for broken relationships in the United States. Doing small things on a regular basis for your partner can show them you care and that you value and appreciate their presence in your life.

3. Try to Fix Things

Instead of getting into an argument, try to look for a solution, says Linda Charnes, LMFT – Counseling & Psychotherapy Practice in NYC. Working on problems together can be a great way to bond. According to a study by Jay Zagorsky, about 33% of couples have different views on income, wealth and debt, and this often leads to arguments between them. To make sure the situation doesn’t get out of control, sit with your partner and discuss these issues.

4. Move Beyond Them

According to John Gottman, a relationship scientist, about 69% of conflicts are persisting problems that the couples fail to find a solution to. Look at the bigger picture and listen to each other. If you want to have a healthy relationship in the long run, you need to move beyond these issues.

5. Recollect Your Best Moments

Memories have the power to heal almost any wound. Whenever you think that there is some tension between you two, recall some of your most memorable moments together, particularly the funny ones. Relive those moments and it will help you find reasons to solve the current problems you may be facing.
